Shaping
Sustainable
Futures
We design the systems that keep a building running: HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, and the controls that tie them together. As a full-service mechanical engineering firm we handle all of it in house, which means the disciplines are coordinated with each other before drawings are issued rather than reconciled later on site.
Our work covers a wide range of building types. Art galleries and hospitals have strict requirements for temperature, humidity and air changes. Data centres are a heat rejection problem before they are anything else. Marinas bring salt air and exposure that most equipment is not specified for. Each of those needs a different answer, and forty years of work in British Columbia is how we know which one to reach for.
We work on new construction and on buildings already in use. Renovation is its own discipline, because existing drawings rarely match what is actually in the ceiling, and the building usually has to keep operating while the work happens.
Our energy modelling, commissioning and auditing services help projects meet a targeted energy standard, including the BC Energy Step Code. We model at design stage, then verify on site that the building was built and set up the way the model assumed.
A Trusted,
Dependable
Team
Avalon has been designing mechanical systems in British Columbia since 1984, from offices in Victoria, Vancouver and Nanaimo. Some of our engineers have been here for decades. Others joined last year out of UVic, UBC and BCIT. Both matter, and the pairing of the two is deliberate.
Working with us means direct access to the engineer doing the work on your project, not a message relayed through an account manager. We will tell you early when something is not going to work, which is less comfortable than the alternative and cheaper for everyone.
Honouring the Stewards of this Land — Employees of Avalon Mechanical are grateful to live, work, and be connected with people from across many traditional and unceded territories, covering all regions of British Columbia. Read more.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What does Avalon Mechanical do?
Avalon is a mechanical engineering consultancy. We design the HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression and control systems in buildings, and we model, commission and test buildings for energy performance. We work for owners, developers and architects across British Columbia.
-
Where is Avalon Mechanical located?
We have three offices in British Columbia: Victoria at 200–1245 Esquimalt Road, Vancouver at 520–1112 West Pender Street, and Nanaimo at 103–5220 Dublin Way. All three are open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
-
What types of buildings does Avalon work on?
Commercial, residential, institutional, healthcare, Indigenous and industrial buildings. Past work ranges from art galleries and hospitals to data centres and marinas.
-
Does Avalon work on existing buildings, or only new construction?
Both. Renovation and retrofit work is a substantial part of what we do, and services such as retro-commissioning, energy studies and building controls optimization apply specifically to buildings already in operation.
-
Can Avalon help a project meet the BC Energy Step Code?
Yes. Our building performance team provides energy modelling, commissioning, energy auditing and blower door testing, and works alongside the mechanical designers on projects with an energy target to meet.
